The Most Beautiful Sunset in the World

In 1964, a world-renowned film director admired the view from his hotel balcony at the Zagreb hotel in Zadar and declared it the most beautiful sunset in the world.

"Zadar has the most beautiful sunset in the world, more beautiful than the one in Key West, Florida, and is applauded every evening."

He even tried to capture the moment with a camera, but it was not possible. So he wrote his impression in his diary. The balcony offered a breathtaking view of the sea horizon. It was even possible to see the other coast of Italy across the Adriatic Sea. This statement may seem bold, but for us Croatians, it is true.

The experience of witnessing such a beautiful sunset has stayed with us for 60 years and counting.

Zadar has experienced significant growth in the last 15 years, both in terms of tourism and economic development. It is currently the fifth largest city in Croatia and the second largest in the Dalmatian region, after Split. Historically, people documented the first signs of a city in 384 BC, establishing it as the oldest continuously inhabited city in Croatia. It became fully urbanized under the Roman Empire and has remained so for over 2,000 years.

Throughout history, just like any other part of Croatia, Zadar has been under the rule of various empires and nations. These include the Austro-Hungarian, French Republic, and Roman empires, which have all left their mark on the cityscape. As a result, the city boasts some impressive buildings and monuments such as the Church of St. Donatus and Forum Square.

These structures date back to the Roman Empire. They serve as the central point of the city, hosting festivals, concerts, and other events. Additionally, the city has some modern installations like the Sea Organ and Greetings to the Sun.

The Sea Organ is a beautiful and unique blend of architecture and music. The sound produced by the Sea Organ is the result of the release of energy from waves and tides, and has become the symbol of the city since its very beginning.

Architectual wonders

The Greeting to the Sun is a monument located in Zadar that is dedicated to the Sun. It comprises three hundred glass plates that are stacked in a circle with a diameter of 22 meters. They are situated at the same level as the stone-paved waterfront. Nikola Bašić, a Croatian architect, designed the monument, which represents communication with nature and light. Nearby, he also created the Sea Organ, which communicates through sound.

You can find the monument at the entrance of the Port of Zadar, located on the western edge of the Zadar peninsula, known locally as Riva. From this spot, you can enjoy stunning views of the Zadar channel, the islands, and the famous sunset. The Riva is a popular spot for gatherings and meetings, where visitors can take a stroll while enjoying the view of the islands and the open sea to the northwest.

In the evening, the sky turns into a palette of colors, ranging from delicate pink to bright red, creating a truly magical experience. The sea reflects light calmly, creating a perfect picture. Zadar is a place where you can relax and enjoy nature while listening to the sounds of the Sea Organ and Greeting the Sun.

The vibrant spectacle captivates everyone in the city as the sun sets behind the Zadar islands. Its rays of light dance through the streets, creating a beautiful sunset.

Make sure to visit this popular tourist attraction that skilfully blends ancient monuments with modern attractions! It’s an absolute must-see that you won’t want to miss.
